Whilst most people will be lucky enough not to have to experience an office fire, you do need to be prepared in case one occurs. Make sure people know about it – If you come across a fire in your office the first thing you need to do is raise the alarm. You should trigger any fire alarms that your office might have and verbally alert any colleagues that you have in your immediate area. If you don’t have a fire alarm you should install one that automatically notifies the fire department if it is triggered. If you don’t have an alarm, you should call 000 after ensuring your colleagues are notified.
Only fight the fire if safe to do so – If you have the right firefighting equipment and it is nearby you may want to consider extinguishing the fire. You should only do this if you know the exact cause of the fire and you have the right equipment. Evacuate the building – If you cannot extinguish the fire you need to evacuate the building and ensure that your colleagues have also safely evacuated. If you are in a multi level building you need to ensure that you do not use any lifts as these may be compromised in the case of a fire. Do not re-enter the building after you have left it.
